The USA's  Top 25

Tourist Destinations

No. 1 Destination: Times Square

Here’s a fun and interesting resource to help you plan your next getaway: Forbes Magazine’s list of the Top 25 most-visited tourist sites in the U. S. for 2008.

Forbes concentrated on “sites of historical or cultural interest; natural phenomena and landmarks; and delimited (or officially designated) spaces of entertainment and recreation.” Some destinations, such as Times Square, have commercial components. However, the magazine did not include stand-alone shopping malls and casinos (if they had, Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut and Minnesota’s Mall of America would have topped the list).

Attendance numbers were taken from the tourist attractions themselves, along with data from government agencies and other reliable tourism sources.

Here’s the list, together with the number of yearly visitors in 2008:

  1. Times Square (New York City): 35 million

  2. The Las Vegas Strip (Las Vegas): 31 million
